We have always pride ourselves as the first institution who implement Project-Based Learning in the region, where students immediately apply the theories they learn to industry projects in the class. Designed for those who want to experience Project-Based Learning before joining the college, IACT College ran ImPossible Prep Class, a 1-month experiential learning workshop conducted by our industry lecturers for school leavers. The most recent one was held in January 2018, marking the fifth time the institute runs it since 2016.
Participants of the Prep Class get to learn in small class setting as they learn various skills like ideation, copywriting, graphic design, marketing campaign planning and presentation skill. These skills are learned as they work on a marketing project with industry brands.
Having worked with big brands like Domino’s Pizza, Sunshine Kingdom, Pit Stop café and Karat Two-Lane in the previous Prep Class, IACT College partnered with Whimsy Whimsical paper goods and stationary this time, a local brand with international fame.
Prep Class participants received a marketing brief from the founder of Whimsy Whimsical, Yee Von Chan to run a marketing campaign for their products on different festivities. The lecturer in charge of Prep Class, Nicola Wong and her team then assist and guide students to complete the brief in the span of 3 weeks.
Nicola Wong said, “We decided to focus more on social media marketing and graphic design this time round. I like that a lot of them are very keen to learn new skills. There’s a lot of creativity going around and the end result of it is pretty nice!”
Yee Von Chan also said, “I love the ideas from the workshop participants and I can really work on some of them! I am very impressed given that they have only 1-month to learn all these skill and some of them even went above and beyond their capabilities!”
When asked about their experience in the Prep Class, one workshop participant Lee Xin Yi says, “It’s been very rewarding! IACT lecturers are very knowledgeable of their field yet they were very patient with us. After the 1-month course, I’m glad to say that I now know enough basics to come out with my own designs using several design softwares.”
Another workshop participant, Nurul Sakinah Zulkhairi says “I love fact that I got to work with friends from different cultural background, and it was fun to learn the dynamics of working with people of different language and opinion – just like how it will be in the industry!”
